Beyond the fast pacing and effective explosions and bombing sequences, Fuqua is aided by an excellent cast of veteran actors who lend a tone of gravitas and provide a solid foundation for the over-all story. It feels like a really good idea desperately looking for a filmmaker and production crew able to convincingly bring it to life. “Olympus Has Fallen” was a trip back in time through both the film’s high-octane action as well as with its predictable shortcomings.
Cast and characters
Killick catches Emily filming the intruders on her phone and takes her hostage. Cale and Sawyer contact the command structure via a scrambled satellite phone in the residence and try to escape via a secret tunnel but find the exit rigged with explosives. They escape in the presidential limo but are chased by Stenz and crash into the White House pool. With Sawyer and Cale presumed dead in an explosion in the cabana, the 25th Amendment is invoked; Hammond is sworn in as president. Cale and Sawyer, still alive, learn Hammond has ordered an aerial incursion to retake the White House, but the mercenaries shoot down the helicopters with FGM-148 Javelins.

Kang uses Asher's hostage status to demand Trumbull to withdraw U.S. He also seeks to detonate the American nuclear arsenal to turn North America into an irradiated wasteland as revenge for the death of his parents. To do this, he needs the access codes to the Cerberus nuclear arsenal system, held only by Asher, Secretary of Defense Ruth McMillan, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Joseph Hoenig, all of whom are inside the PEOC. Asher orders McMillan and Hoenig to reveal their codes to save their lives, certain that he will not give up his own code.

Of course, the thrust of "Olympus Has Fallen" centers on the actual kidnapping of the president and his top advisers, including the vice president and the secretary of defense.
With Finnerty's help, Cale realizes that Raphelson was the one who gave Walker the launch codes, having acted at the behest of the corrupt military–industrial complex. Believing Sawyer dead and that Cale will never be believed, Raphelson is tricked into confessing and arrested for treason. Sawyer names Cale his new special agent and takes him and Emily on an aerial tour of D.C. On Marine One, aboard which he receives word that other nations have agreed to his peace deal after learning of the events at the White House, calling for an end to all wars to ensure peace. Olympus Has Fallen is the closest an action movie using the Die Hard formula has come to that seminal film without being an actual Die Hard movie.
It delivers some excellent visuals and a few surprising twists that add beautifully to the suspense. While the head terrorist role could easily have degenerated into a one-dimensional cartoonvillain, Rick Yune is terrific as the chillingly charming — yet completely lethal — Yang, the mastermind of the entire plot. Fuqua and his writing team of Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt gave us a nice twist — a smart cinematic gift, really — as that forementioned "tragic event" (which I will not spoil by revealing) becomes a clever plot surprise. It's always good when something you KNOW is about to happen in a movie doesn't occur the way you think it will. This film's title comes from the fictional Secret Service code ("Olympus") for the White House, which is being led by a very President Kennedy-esque Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart). But the true lead actor in this constantly gripping tale is Gerard Butler as Mike Banning, once the top presidential protecter for the Asher family, until a tragic event led him to be transferred to a pedestrian Secret Service job in the Treasury Department.
